Clean Up
Australia
Day,
Sunday, 2nd March 2008
. 12 SLIAG members were joined by a record number of 21 Illawarra residents from 9am onward. We donned gloves, collected our bags and cleaned up the lake foreshore from Windang bridge to the Police Citizens Youth Club between Reddall Parade and the lake.
This year we had 2 bags each, one for general rubbish and another for recyclables. A bit inconvenient to drag around, but what a great idea. Our group collected lots and lots of rubbish ranging from cigarette buts, lolly wrappers, bottles etc as well as an 81cm plasma TV and wire bed base.
At
11am
we all retired to Reddall Reserve. Shellharbour City Council and Stockland had $1000 up for grabs in the form of a treasure hunt. Buried in the sand were small minute garbage bins containing prizes. If your name was called out you got a chance to dig a plot approx 1m square. If a bin was found, the prize inside is yours. Only 3 names were called out at a time so there was no stampede. It was great to see so many little kids digging and their happy grins when a bin was found.
At the end of the dig our group retired to a shed to have hot chips from “Peppies” , some buttered bread and soft drinks consumed then. After we were all full, Cobie brought out her famous cream horns and other pastries. We all had a great day out and a very efficient clean up of some of the lake foreshore.
